Celebrate Juneteenth in the Parks!

Back to News & Updates

The Olmsted parks are great places to celebrate Juneteenth! Wondering about the amenities that various parks offer? Read on for info that will help you plan your perfect day.

Chickasaw Park is significant as the only park designed by the Olmsted firm for Black Louisvillians during segregation. The Chickasaw Park lodge is currently closed following storm damage, but two outdoor shelters are available: one pavilion is near Southwestern Parkway and is situated next to a playground. The other is adjacent to the lodge and the new Sankofa Sanctuary featuring a natural playground and beautiful rover overlook.

The West Louisville flagship park of the Olmsted Park System is Shawnee Park. The Shawnee Park Pavilion is located right next to one of Louisville’s best spraygrounds and is also convenient to restrooms, the playground and nature play space.

Elliott Park in the Russell neighborhood recently got a full renovation, and the new sprayground is a hit with the kids! The park also offers a field house that is perfect for setting up a potluck, built in chess tables and new grills.

Victory Park in the California neighborhood got an extensive renovation in 2019. The lodge offers restrooms, a kitchen, air conditioning and new grills, all within view of the new playground, basketball courts and spray pad.

Cherokee Park, the flagship Olmsted Park in the East, offers the Stegner Pavilion just past Hogan’s Fountain on the scenic loop. The pavilion is near restrooms and basketball courts.

Algonquin Park features a large picnic shelter next to modern, interactive sprayground and the newly opened pool.

All rentals are arranged through Louisville Parks and Recreation! Juneteenth is on Thursday, June 19, but festivities are sure to continue into the weekend. >>>CLICK HERE TO LEARN ABOUT RENTALS!
