The Chickasaw Park pollinator meadow is planted!

Back to News & Updates

The Butterfly and Bee Pollinator Meadow in Chickasaw Park has been seeded! We had a wonderful experience working with Roundstone Native Seed from Upton, Kentucky. One of the largest native seed producers in the country, Roundstone focuses on regional ecotype seeds; seeds that evolved from the plants in the specific area they are being installed. Roundstone broadcast seeded a mix of 37 different species of annual and native perennial forbs and grasses on the roughly 3-acre site.

Broadcasting is a method that mimics natural seed dispersal while evenly distributing varied seed over the site in a process that lessens impact on erosion while increasing germination success.

While some species will establish quickly and bloom as soon as this fall, other species can take 2-3 years to establish and bloom. The intentional variation in species selected will provide year-round interest for park users, as well as food and habitat sources for pollinators. This meadow honors the late Muhammad Ali, who spent time training in Chickasaw Park. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!
