Louisville Parks & Recreation is hosting a public forum on their Facebook page on Tuesday, March 23rd at 6 p.m. regarding the Scenic Loop in Cherokee Park. A meeting regarding the closure at Iroquois Park will be held on Tuesday, April 6th at 6 p.m. Click here to visit their Facebook page for more information.

Louisville Parks & Recreation posted recordings of the public meetings for Cherokee and Iroquois Parks on their YouTube channel, as well as on their Facebook page.

With the onset of Covid-19 and the closure of almost all other recreational amenities, our parks have become busier than they ever have been. People have flocked to these spaces to exercise and socialize, and the need for more space became immediately apparent. If we were asking everyone to maintain 6 feet of distance between one another, we needed all the roadway for people, not cars.

In April 2020, Rundill Road in Iroquois Park, the Scenic Loop in Cherokee Park, and the interior road in Chickasaw Park were closed to vehicles. The road in Chickasaw Park was re-opened soon thereafter because access to the park was limited with the vehicular closure.

While the City of Louisville initially decided to close these roads to allow for the increase in usage, with the reduction in Covid-19 cases and the increasing number of people who have been vaccinated, the time is right to determine the best next steps for these public spaces.

While we know that these closures have been a welcome relief for so many, they have not been without issue. In Cherokee Park, we know that access to the Bonnycastle Hill area is less accessible and finding a parking space can feel a little like the Wild West. In Iroquois Park, some areas are a little more difficult to get to and when there is a nearby accident, traffic can be a headache for local residents.

This is why we need your help. Please take the surveys to help guide Louisville Parks and Recreation and Olmsted Parks Conservancy in finding a solution.
