Parks are good for us: take care of your heart during Valentine season!

Back to News & Updates

This Valentine season, take care of your heart!

We love parks, and they love us back. There are so many health benefits that come with outdoor recreation or just spending time in nature. In the month of valentines and heart health, we celebrate how parks are good for us!

According to the National Forest Service, studies show that being outside in nature is relaxing, reducing our stress, cortisol levels, muscle tension and heart rates – all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Simply appreciating a walk along a Cherokee Park stream or sitting quietly by the Shawnee Park Lily Pond can quiet your mind and give your body a chance to recover from the daily grind.

Parks also provide opportunities for running, cycling, hiking, tennis, pickleball, basketball and more! If you have ever taken the stairs up to the Iroquois Park North Overlook, you know how that hike gets your heart pumping! In Chickasaw Park, the Fit Lot offers free outdoor workout equipment. You could also follow in Muhammad Ali’s footsteps and go for a run – Chickasaw Park was one of his favorite places to train.

Whether you use the parks for active or restful benefits this February, know that you are taking steps to protect your heart while showing our parks some love!
