For Keri and Brendan Kennedy, a young professional couple who love being outdoors and feel a strong civic commitment to their city, volunteering in the Frederick Law Olmsted Parks in a perfect fit. Almost every Saturday morning you can find these two working in an Olmsted Park. Keri, who works for Republic National Distributing Company, and Brendan, a graphic designer at Vivid Impact, agree donating a few hours to improving their city and the parks is their favorite way to start a weekend.
Over the past year they have volunteered in Cherokee, Seneca, Iroquois, Tyler, Shelby, Bingham and Chickasaw Parks planting trees, removing invasive species, mulching trees and much more. Keri, who also completed the Conservancy’s Park Steward program, says they love learning about the flora and fauna in the parks and as well as observing over time how volunteering improves the parks. As an example, Brendan reported how rewarding it is that Bingham Park feels safer and looks so much more cared for because of the monthly volunteer sessions occurring there.
