The Director of Development plans and executes all aspects of the Development Department, including but not limited to major giving, grants, membership, fundraising and cultivation events, and campaigns. The Director creates an annual fundraising plan to increase revenue from individuals, foundations, corporations, and special events. Analyzes data and improves methods for solicitation of membership and major gifts to increase annual support. Must be articulate, poised and professional when regularly meeting with donors and community leaders. The position will work closely with the Director of Marketing, and will supervise the Membership Manager and Office and Events Manager.

REPORTS TO:  President/CEO; FLSA Status: Exempt


  1. Develop and execute annual fundraising plan to meet revenue goals, which reflect the Conservancy’s capital and operating needs. These plans should address strategic growth in the areas of major gifts, memberships, planned giving, events, and grants.
  2. Develop relationships with existing and new major donors to increase support. This includes working with Conservancy staff to identify funding opportunities, then presenting opportunities to potential donors, and following gifts through—from solicitation to stewardship.
  3. Maintain clear communication and reporting with Board of Trustees, specifically providing staff leadership to Development Committee. Work with Trustees to create and carry out personal fundraising plans that help impact the organization’s strategic goals and bottom line.
  4. Identify and solicit corporate prospects for special event sponsorships, as well as restricted gifts that align with both corporate priorities and Conservancy needs.
  5. Renew and seek new grant-making opportunities, utilizing all resources including Trustees, community volunteer, management and staff. Steward grants and create all necessary reports and communications to foundations.
  6. Manage and support Membership Manager. Assist in goal setting, as well as tracking progress throughout the year to ensure achievement and growth of Membership Program.
  7. Manage and support Events Manager. Assist in oversight of special events to ensure that goals are set and achieved, and events are executed to satisfaction of staff, Trustees and attendees.
  8. Leads the staff in ensuring appropriate communications with active and prospective donors. Works closely with Marketing/Communications team in all constituent communications.
  9. Ensures that development activities comply with contract requirements, legal standards, and other applicable rules and regulations.
  10. Manages the Development budget


Bachelor’s degree required. Must be able to present well-developed strategies and implement effective courses of action in prospect solicitation.  Individual should have a proven record of cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding major gifts; as well as experience and success with researching and writing successful foundation proposals.  A high degree of diplomacy and integrity is required, as well as exceptional motivation and creativity.  Passion for Louisville’s Olmsted parks is a must.  The individual must be able to engender confidence, enthusiasm and promote support among constituencies, and must have strong administrative, organizational and interpersonal skills.  Must be willing to work in a small office environment, be team-oriented, and be able to work independently and pro-actively. 

A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted when competency in the role is demonstrated.  The employee must be able to maintain complete confidentiality of any information s/he encounters.


This position requires computer knowledge and skill.  Must be able to use standard business software including, Microsoft Office, donor databases and email programs.  Attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills and confidentiality are essential.
