Olmsted Parks Conservancy is thrilled to announce a transformative $5 million anonymous donation that will be used to restore Chickasaw Park, a longstanding gathering place rooted in the West End of Louisville.
This investment will restore a community landmark long regarded as a symbol of pride and belonging for generations of Black Louisvillians.
This gift is the second largest donation in Olmsted Parks Conservancy’s history, and the Chickasaw Park Restoration Project will be the largest full scale park renovation led by the Conservancy.
To ensure that this process reflects the needs and hopes of the Chickasaw area community, Olmsted Parks Conservancy has established the Chickasaw Park Restoration Community Steering Committee, composed of respected community leaders and longtime park advocates:
- Kristen Williams, Executive Director, Play Cousins Collective
- Aretha Fuqua, President, West Louisville Tennis Club
- Ramona Dallum, Community Leader and Park Neighbor
Olmsted Parks Conservancy invites the community to give input on future improvements in Chickasaw Park!
When you take part in this survey, you help contribute to the future vision for a community landmark long regarded as a symbol of pride and belonging for generations of Black Louisvillians.

Recent community wide investment has elevated Chickasaw Park, with a restored pond, renovated tennis courts (home of the West Louisville Tennis Club) and the new Sankofa Sanctuary (home of Play Cousins Collective.) As the only park in the country designed by the Olmsted Firm for Black Americans during segregation, Chickasaw Park is a site of national significance. We still have more work to do to honor the history of the park and its people.
Home to West Louisville Tennis Club, beloved by Muhammad Ali and cherished as a hub of Black life in Louisville, Chickasaw Park is a Louisville treasure. Olmsted Parks Conservancy is honored to work with the community to steward this historic landscape.

As part of this transformational project, Olmsted Parks Conservancy is hiring a full time position, Project Ambassador: Olmsted West, to manage the community engagement process.
