Remarkable Women of Louisville’s Olmsted Parks

Back to News & Updates

March is Women’s History Month, and we salute some of the remarkable women of Louisville’s Olmsted Parks!

Enid Yandell: sculptor of the Daniel Boone Monument and Hogan’s Fountain in Cherokee Park and the Wheelman’s Bench in Wayside Park.

Althea Gibson, the first African American woman to win at Wimbledon, played a tournament at Chickasaw Park in the 1940s. That match was followed by a clinic aimed at encouraging more women to play tennis.

Massie Cooper – matriarch of the “Kentucky Tennis Family” for which the Tyler Park sports courts are named.
