On April 26, we celebrated Frederick Law Olmsted’s 189th Birthday!
The weather held for a lovely celebration with cupcakes and frisbees for all who attended. But the highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the new park system name and logo: Frederick Law Olmsted Parks.
To promote Frederick Law Olmsted and his vision for urban parks, and to remind Louisvillians of the value these historic parks bring to our city, we introduced the new name for this great parks system. While we’ll always have Cherokee, Shawnee, Iroquois, and the other 15 parks and 6 parkways designed by the Olmsted firm, together these works of art should bear the name of their creator, Frederick Law Olmsted.
Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision developed during his decades-long career designing our country’s great urban landscapes, including New York’s Central Park. He justly became known, and is still honored today, as the Father of American landscape architecture.
It is because of Olmsted’s vision that Louisville has parks that improve the property value of homes, enhance the economy, support a healthy environment, and provide gathering places for all residents to come together.
