Did you know there is an Olmsted Park right across from the Churchill Downs backside? Chances are you have driven right by it on the way to Wagner’s Pharmacy or while headed to the more famous Iroquois Park.
Wayside Park is a hidden gem with a curious piece of public art that many Louisvillians don’t know of – the Wheelman’s Bench. Designed by Enid Yandell, who also designed Hogan’s Fountain and the Daniel Boone statue in Cherokee Park, the bench was constructed in 1897 by the Kentucky Division of the League of American Wheelman to honor cycling pioneer A.D. Ruff (1827-96.)
Wayside Park is getting a restoration and beautification just in time for Derby! The Wheelman’s Bench received conservation and repair work thanks to Louisville Metro Public Art. Olmsted Parks Conservancy is restoring the landscape bed and installing the iconic World’s Fair style benches, new signage and a new water fountain.
